M. Trager am a Bioinformatics Programmer working in two laboratories in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the W. K. Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. Kellogg is a world-class vision research center with approximately 17 basic research scientists and over 50 research staff. His Open Source programming experience began in earnest when he developed *Madeline*, a C/C++ program for preparing and visualizing human pedigree data used in genetic linkage studies. Madeline was released under a GPL license in 2001. After Madeline, he developed *Cicada*, a PHP/Apache/MySQL-based system for managing marker data used in genetic linkage analyses. He is currently serving as the senior architect on a new PHP-based clinical database for use at Kellogg called *Gladiator* which will be the subject of this session. Prior to working at the Kellogg Eye Center, he was an Experienced Consultant in the Internet Development Center of Arthur Andersen, LLP, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Alex Pukinskis is an independent software coach and developer in Boulder, Colorado. He works with software teams that want to reduce risk by becoming more agile. Alex has been developing custom web applications since 1995, and currently provides PHP-based solutions to a wide range of clients. Prior to working independently, he led development of a PHP-based knowledge management system, developed a web-based video network management system, and worked for several other high-tech firms. Frank Boumphrey is an experienced speaker and the author or part author of 8 books on XML and/or web related topics. He has been programming in PHP for several years and has used it to build several web applications. His interests include medical infomatics, project management and document management. He has supervised the building of several industrial strength applications. He has built applications for several hospitals that uses PHP and native databases (preferably MySQL) to integrate data from disparate, non-communicating proprietary software. This has allowed the readout of previously locked information on a daily basis. He has also used PHP together with MySQL & XML to build document and project management systems. Adam Trachtenberg started using PHP in 1997 and is the co-author of O'Reilly's PHP Cookbook. He has an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School, where he concentrated in general management. Before returning to school, Adam co-founded and served as Vice President for Development at two companies, Student.Com and TVGrid.Com. At both firms, he led the front- and middle-end web site design and development. Adam is currently writing another book for O'Reilly, this time on PHP 5.
